The Living Room Holographic Stage

System Architecture: The Living Room Holographic Stage Overview Infographic

The Concept

This project establishes a premium, bespoke Volumetric Production and Playback Ecosystem designed for a private residential setting. The objective is to record real-world actors, environments, and multi-channel audio on a dedicated capture set, convert that data into a true 4D time-evolving holographic format, and play it back seamlessly on a massive, glasses-free light field display.

The resulting experience allows viewers to move around a living room and watch captured human performances with real physical depth. Moving your head left or right reveals hidden angles of the actors and physical sets, exactly as if looking through a portal into a live physical performance.

Hardware Architecture

To achieve studio-quality recording and flawless holographic playback, the system splits into two distinct hardware loops: the Capture Stage and the Living Room Theater.

01 / The Playback & Display Suite

  • The Display: Looking Glass 65" Synapse Light Field Display. Projects 100 simultaneous perspectives to generate glasses-free group 3D viewing.
  • The Workstation: Custom Liquid-Cooled Media Server providing massive rendering muscle for 4D multi-view unzipping.
  • The Graphics Power: Dual NVIDIA RTX 6000 Ada Generation GPUs connected via high-speed PCIe Gen 5 configurations.
  • Core Specs: AMD Ryzen Threadripper PRO (64-Core) processor paired with 256GB DDR5 ECC RAM.
  • Storage Array: 8TB NVMe M.2 SSD RAID 0 array capable of extreme >10 GB/s read speeds for seamless 4D playback.

02 / The Volumetric Capture Stage

  • The Depth Camera Rig: Array of 4 to 8 synchronized Stereolabs ZED X depth sensors arranged in a precise arc facing the performance stage.
  • The Master Sync Box: Hardware Genlock hub force-synchronizing every single camera down to the exact microsecond to eliminate movement artifacts.
  • Audio Ingest: Studio-grade directional shotgun microphones linked to a professional Dante-enabled network audio interface.

Hardware Synchronization Detail

The core of successful volumetric generation depends entirely on microscopic timing synchronization across the entire multi-camera array.

Software & Data Pipeline

The entire workflow is driven by a custom software pipeline built directly on top of industrial media frameworks, handling data compression, timing alignment, and real-time light field projection.

The Capture & Encoding Engine

Driven natively by TouchDesigner, the software ingest layer pulls synchronous high-resolution RGB color maps and 32-bit Depth maps from the camera array simultaneously.

TouchDesigner acts as the unified system timeline clock, locking the incoming Dante studio audio directly to the visual depth-frames to ensure zero lip-sync drift during extended performance recording sequences.
